Neurophysiology

We have designed in our laboratory an experimental ring composed of the Med Associates automatic behavioral chamber coupled with the TDT 128-channel recording system. For our experiments, we prepare in our laboratory custom bundles of platinum-iridium 16 micro-wire electrodes along with a stainless steel electrode as reference and a stainless steel conventional ground connected by a customized micro omnetic connector to the TDT head stage. We implant our probes secured in the guide cannula into the brain and record the neuronal activity in freely moving rats during feeding events.

This picture shows a screenshot of OpenProject interface (TDT) in which the electrophysiological variables like local field potential (LFP; Band filtered for 1-500 Hz and 200-10000 Hz) and cumulative spikes exceeding the manual window threshold are recorded using a 16 channel acute A-series probe (NeuroNexus) implanted in lateral hypothalamus (LH) of an anesthetized rat. There is a synchrony and tonic activity of the LH neurons in a behaviorally anesthetized state.

This picture shows a screenshot of OpenProject interface (TDT) in which the local field potential (LFP; Band filtered for 0-200 Hz and 500-8000 Hz) and cumulative spikes exceeding threshold were recorded from the pre-limbic prefrontal cortex (PFC) using 16-channel custom-made platinum-iridium probes in freely moving rats during licking of 10% sucrose. There was an anticipatory hyperactivity of single units and desynchronization in the LFP before the onset of licks. The onset of lick triggered a transient synchronization of LFP. During the course of licking, the LFP returned to a more desynchronized state and the single units activity was decreased.
